Westion is Doomed!
Hello, folks! I have successfully made my first Design Notes post last week and have miraculously been given permission to do another. No one is more surprised than me. I want to start out by saying Thyton has a Spartan helmet on and is running around like a crazy person. Good ol, Thyton....

Anywho, as many fo you know, we are still continuing Westion's Part 2, Chapter 2, Part II, however you look at it. I haven't seen many Part II's. Actually, I haven't seen any at all. So what does all of this mean? It means we're fighting more enemies as the Shadowscythe attack. I know the Sheriff needs more help. We're doing some mining stuff.

I'm really babbling. I spent most of my week(and nights) animating the new weapons and the cutscene which turned out awesome, says I. I says it because it is!

Moving on, I have no idea what's going on next week. Warlic said it would be a hefty animation week. Woo!!

We're actually thinking of weapon names while I write this and I have quickly realized that I am useless in that department. While on the subject, I am also useless in the color department. I warn you all, never ask me for color suggestions on anything. I'm not color blind. I'm just color-dumb.

It might just be notepad, which is the program I'm writing this on (yes, I'm a PC and happy about it) but these Design Notes look pretty wimpy. I could easily babble my way to have more words for reading but do you really want that? Really?

I know what I really want. I really want all of you to love the cutscene. I expect to get on the forums and see such comments as "Boy that cutscene was amazing!! Korin, you are my hero!" and "Korin. That cutscene has changed the way I look at life. I realize now that the world is a lovely place" as well as "Hey, that was neat."

Some ab-libbing is okay, as long as the general message about the cutscene remains positive.

I am pleased with the least pargraph as well as that last sentence. So pleased, I will issue a "laugh out loud". Prepare yourselves.

LOL.

Great success.

So does anyone like these Design Notes? I mean, I'm mostly babbling for your enjoyment. The world may never know.

Anyways, Hope you all enjoy the release. We've got some fun stuff in it. I'm happy with the weapons and the cutscenes. Warlic is happy with the quests and content. Jemini is sick right now but I'm sure she's happy with something. I'm sure everyone else is happy with something. We're all happy with something. Happy-go-lucky us. Happy-go-lucky YOU!!!

Enjoy the release/weekend/night/anything else you do.

Westion Updates!
Wednesday Mini-Updates: Westion Overhauls - Today I went into Planet Westion and made a few updates. The most noticiable changes are the addition of the new chapter 2 Sheriff zone to the Drakel town of Khaeldron. I also updated the town options menus to match our more recent interface appearance. While I was digging around in the old Westion files, I decided to add “smart arrows” that will tell you which direction you can walk in all of those quest that have you wandering around in the desert! This will hopefully make those quests a little less confusing. I had originally intended for those quests to make you feel like you were really lost in a desert – unfortunately I think I achieved that a little bit too well and and some players really did get lost in those quests!

Note – the new Westion quests do not require you to have completed Chapter 1. However, when you enter a chapter 2 zone, you will be informed that it is a chapter 2 zone. This will allow new players to experience the new releases with everyone else and won't cause an extremely confusing quest chain with tons of little pre-requisites that are not very clearly explained. Quest Chain confusion was initially the biggest issue with Planet Westion. The next thing that will need to be added to Westion is a quest log similar to the C-mail system in Soluna City.

This Friday, Sheriff Grif'th has another quest for you! The Shadowscythe are busy planting bombs around the planet and he will need your help finding and diffusing them! This adventure is going to take you back into the mines of Khaeldron – but this time you are about to get caught in a horrendous Shadowscythe trap!

Oh and rumour has it, There is a Vul'Kharim Priestess looking for you:

Tikala

Is she a Friend or foe? Find out Friday!

Answers to Your Mod Slot Questions!

Is my Nova Gem mecha supposed to have an extra slot?
The second mod slot will be available on all Star Captain and all Nova Gem mechas.

I thought this was for only certain levels of mechas, but my low-level mecha has one. Will this change?
There is no level restriction - all levels of mechas available as Star Captain exclusives, and all levels of Nova Gem mechas are included. (Thank Warlic for this - he completely forgot about the planned level restrictions!)

My mecha with SC-only specials doesn't have an extra slot! Can this be changed?
The mechas with Star-Captain-Only specials will soon be upgradable by Star Captains via the new mecha merge shop we're preparing.

Where will I find the new mecha merge shop?
This shop will be located in the Star Captain Club.

How much will it cost me to upgrade my qualifying mecha with a new slot?
This upgrade will not cost anything! The merge item will cost 0 credits. Zero!

My mecha qualifies, but is rare! Will I still be able to get its extra slot?
Yes, your rare mecha with Star-Captain-Only specials will be upgradable in this shop.

If you'd like to ask a question about the new extra mod slot feature, normally we'd send you to our handy MechQuest Questions & Answers forum here where our forum members are always happy to help ... but for the new mod slot feature we have a special Official FAQ thread in the General Discussion Forum that includes the information posted above and will be updated with official answers from the MQ Team to your latest mod slot questions. These answers will of course be provided as soon as we have "official answers" to give!

Official "Mod Slots FAQs Answered" - clickable link for your convenience!

I'll be busybusy working on the preparations for the upcoming Star Captain Club extra-slot merge shop. andy123 asks on the forums,, "are you guys shure you want to do this?? i mean there are kinda a lot of Non Sc mechs with Sc specials." My answer is this: "Absolutely positive! Yes, it'll be a lot of work for me to do this, but it's definitely worth every moment of my time!" (This is a team effort, but the behind-the-scenes prep is mostly my job - I'll be the one prepping the actual mechas and merges ... and yeah, there are kinda a lot ... but I seriously don't mind at all!)

Wednesday Mini-Release: We will be updating Planet Westion with the newer menu bar, bringing it in line with other areas that have already gotten the latest interface style. Also on Wednesday, the Sheriff will be added in Khaeldron, and we'll have a few minor bugfixes to Westion Chapter 2. (Like, er .... Techdorah's one attack that's, um, reallllllly strong ...)

See you on the forums! And ... enjoy! And now - Game Balance news from blues!

GBD News Through the Transdimensional Portal!...

K&S update:
Unfortunately this will take some more time; Sorry for the delay, but we are planning to make some exciting changes to the Knife &Spork challenges! When possible, all enemies in the higher
challenges will get "attack patterns" to make them more of a challenge - and hopefully we will get also some new enemies. And there will be higher Level challenges of course.

House Mechas:
Some of you have noted on the forums that the House Mechas, especially the advanced versions, are no longer on par with our new Mechas. That´s true. The AHM´s are not supposed
to be always the best Mechas available ... but they are a bit outdated now. We are planning to change them a bit with the next upgrade - but please don´t expect them to be the best of the best even then. They are upgradable for SC players and so they are not very expensive - and for NSC players they are reliable Mechas. They have their uses, but you're not supposed to be able to annihilate anything and everything in your path easily when you are using your House mecha. :)

Seppy and Skullcrusher:
We have a thread in the Game Balance Discussion forum noting that the Sepulchure and Skullcrusher mechas don´t have similar power ... well ... this is not possible, as you all may now know. I think they both are really good - and the true power of them is that you get a unique Level 1 Mecha which you can upgrade and it is always one of the best Mechas in game. (Maybe Seppy needs a bit of a buff for the next upgrade, but it will be just a minor one if any.)

Have fun!

Part 2's (now with ketchup and walruses):

Ahem. Good morning! My name is Korin and I will temporarily be your guide through today's Design Notes. Most of my information will be relatively useless however... Maegwyn THE MAGNIFICENT!!! *pause for dramatic music cue* will be assisting with the useful information below. The most I could tell you is that we are beginning Westion Part 2. What does part 2 mean, you ask? Well typically, Part 2's take place after Part 1's however most Part 1's never know they will have a Part 2 so they just don't have a Part anything. In some cases, Part 2's can be bad things (see Star Wars). However, in other cases, Part 2's can be awesome things (see Back to the Future). This Part 2 of Westion will be the latter. No need to fear it though. Just embrace the awesome that is going to download to your computer monitor and then upload to the optical orbs of your face.**

Maegwyn just posted me a list of the... badges she made. Long list. I will reply to her saying "That's awesome and looks great" Then later she will read this and go "lol. That's also awesome".

I would also like to point out for funsies, yes "funsies", that my laptop power cord is broken and I am awaiting a new one so that I can use my natively slow laptop. HOWEVER!!! I am using a Mac (not a fan, personally...) and Warlic will often use this for music. Well, I signed on to my account that we chat with as staff and instead of giving me my awesome Space Ghost icon, it gives me a pair of lip-sticked lips. Hot pink, indeed!

The sad part is, there's these awesome speakers and I can't figure them out. :(

But HEY!! I bet you're excited about this new release! I want whoever is reading this to raise your right hand.

Higher.

Now lower it.

Nevermind. Horrible idea. Most of you were not participating and this saddens me. But you know what? That's fine. I've babbled enough. Enjoy your release, young space cadets. We have worked hard to bring you, your future!!!

... sounds like that should be on some sort of tour... Is this a tour?...... Apparently this is a tour..... Apparently this is the END of the tour.... No.... It's not yet. Here come some asterisks and a small segment by Maegwyn where she will attempt to balance out the insanity with some sanity. I wish her luck. Thinking about it... Her post may be above mine. Which if it is, disregard EVERYTHING I have said.

Except that.

And that.

But not that.

Westion Part 2!
Return to Westion: You all saw the Preview - well now, get ready for the Real Thing! Complete with exciting opening cutscene, fun quests, and stinkin' badges! (And don't forget to check out the Impound Shops!)

Extra Mod Slots Are Here! Thank you, Rolith!!!!!! Star Captains will now be able to equip TWO stat-boosting Mods to your mechas! (Yes, we tested this - huge thanks to Azami* and blues! We know it works ... on ... the mecha we used for testing it!)

Where's Warlic?! muahahaha! My clever plan is falling into place nicely! I've deposited blues into the Transdimensional Portal and now it seems that Warlic too has met with some sort of interesting and as-yet-unrevealed fate - one that obviously involves much silence and invisibility... but you can still find him in the Dean's Office at GEARS .... (Yeah, Korin - ok, I'll go clean my room so you can get a word in edgewise ... but don't forget - I still want Seahawk's pony!)

*Azami is our newest Staff Member who's joined the Artix Entertainment Team to help with Gremlins and MQ testing - some of you will recognize him from his ArchKnight work on the MQ Encyclopedia boards, Gremlins, and generally posting on the AE forums. Stay tuned for our Gremlin-squishing news as time goes on!

Return to the West.
The Shadowscythe are coming to Westion.... This is going to be the first large scale Shadowscythe force to enter the galaxy. In case you were not aware, the forces that you previously faced in Soluna City were only a scouting force. Lord Valoth is personally overseeing this "little project". The ancient Shadowscythe ship wrecked beneath the surface of Westion apparently hold a long lost secret that could spell doom for the entire universe! So get ready for some havoc to be wreaked upon that poor little dusty rock called Westion... (BTW... anyone who doesn't enjoy the western themed stuff will probably enjoy watching the insanely epic doom and destruction that is about to drop on these poor cowboys...)

The first new zone (in case you haven't guessed from the preview zone) is going to be the Khaeldron Sheriff department. There have been some strange happenings in the desert at night and Sheriff Griff'th is hiring a posse to look into it... hmmm... could it be... Shadowscythe?! the suspense is killing me!

Also, this week's mini-release is a new Zargon comic! The next issue features your character battling it out with Mecha Bat in the bat cave!

And now... a word from Blues! :

Bzzzz...... incoming message through the transdimensional Portal

Here are the latest news from the GBD Forum:

Eagle body attack has been buffed significant so it should be perfect now.

There is a Problem with the Skullcrusher, one Weapon uses too much EP,
thats because the
damage should be higher, this will get fixed soon.

The Enigmatic guns have a Problem with the stun attack. Some versions
do no damage with this attack, this
is not intentional and will also get fixed soon.

We have a lot of complaints about the new Aegis Mecha. This is a
defensive Mecha, this is intentional. Because of this, you have to
skip turns
and fights last longer, but in fact you can´t lose when you know how
to use this Mecha. It will not get changed and we will not buff the
EP.

Ok, that´s it for now. I´m still trapped in this portal so my
avalability is limited, but I hope I will escape soon!

Have fun!

We Have a Winner!
Forum Contest Winner: Forum member Kiva was the first person to post the correct cartoon character that was the inspiration for Professor Anastasia! Congratulations, Kiva! Enjoy your prize! (Correct Answer: The Baroness, from G.I. Joe)

Advanced Combat Theory Rewards: Forums Question! When you complete Professor Anastasia's course, the rewards shops open, and you will find some weapons with names like "Mystery Frontgun" and "Enigmatic Backgun." There's a little story behind this ... You see, blues is still trapped in the transdimensional portal, and while he is able to transmit information to us intermittently, the crackling static interference (caused by the ionic perscrambulator effect) makes conversations ... interesting.

Maegwyn: Hey it's blues! Ok, so about those weapons specials?
blues: Back arm lowering bzzt % and stun plus crackle against Shadowscythe - Front arm dit dit dit % boost and beeeeeep blip...
Korin: Hey, Mae, can you make sure these are working right?
Maegwyn: Sure! *fights something* Um, ok, back arm ... what are they supposed to be doing here? 100% ... can that be right?
Korin: I ... think so. 80 is normal, 20% extra would be 100 ... I know he said 100% somewhere ...
.

Maegwyn: I think he meant stun has no roll - I think the immobility resist was not to change ... but I'm soooo confused! Anyway, I just did ... 108 on Slidz with FA, and it wasn't a crit ... so something is obviously working sometimes! Perhaps ... a bit too well ...
Korin: I noticed something funny with it ... but I think I fixed it. *Snickers*
We could be confused ... yeah, I think I'll just say we ARE confused.

Maegwyn: "We're not quite sure what this does, but it seems rather effective"
Korin: That ... would be an awesome description
Maegwyn: I think we should use it XD
Korin: I'm game for it!
Maegwyn: Sweet ... I shall do eet!

So yeah ... the front arms and back arms each do two different things for their specials. Or maybe even 3, if you consider the extra-against-Shadowscythe feature. Have you figured out what they do yet? Let us know on the forums!

Lagos War: You can still access the war by using the starmap in Soluna City. When you go to Planet Lagos from the map in Soluna City, you will go directly to the War. If you want to play the other Lagos missions, use the "Replay War" button to find the "Rescue Robina" option. "Rescue Robina" will take you to Robert, and you will be able to play all the Lagos missions. Note: Currently you should use the Soluna City map to do this. Also: If you did not complete the missions on Planet Gark before the war, you will need to do so before Planet Lagos will appear on your starmap!

Advanced Combat Theory.
Advanced combat theory is finally here! This new GEARS Class will challenge you by putting you into battles with disadvantages! You will need to choose your mecha and equipment carefully for each fight! You will also have a bizarre rival in this class... A strange new student with a dubious past!

ProfAnastasia

The new Professor, Anastasia*, is very beautiful... but beneath that beneath the surface, she is the toughest GEARS University instructor yet! She bears resemblance to a cartoon character from my fond childhood memories....ah the good ol' days. Can you guess what our inspiration was for her character? Hmmm... I smell a forums contest!

Also, we are getting pretty close to unleashing a shadowscythe horde on Planet Westion... Remeber that prophecy that you inadvertantly fulfilled in Chapter 1? Well... the Shadowscythe are coming... and this time, they're not just sending a scouting force... Anyway, tonight we have a small preview zone for all players! So, stop by Westion, meet the new Sheriff in Khaeldron. blow up some Shadowscythe (You may notice a couple new monster designs) and grab some RARE Preview-only weapons!

Finally, this weekend AE is releasing WarpForce! This is the OFFICIAL Expansion pack to our first-ever RPG game, AdventureQuest! WarpForce will be available for $9.95 to upgraded players from ALL of our games... So even if you are a Star Captain in MechQuest, you will still be able to get the special upgrade price of $9.95 (normal upgrade price for WarpForce is $19.95). I am very excited for Galanoth and the rest of the WarpForce team! (I was also very excited to have had the chance to give them some updated sound effects for the final release!). So, check out WarpForce this weekend HERE!

Why I delayed the last release.
In the zero-hour, I made the controversial decision to delay last Friday's normally scheduled release. Things were originally going quite well and on Thursday morning it looked like we were on schedule for releasing the new Advanced Combat Theory Class at GEARS University. Then, disaster struck. The main issue that we encountered was the new battle system that pre-buffs characters before the battle begins...The new system allows us to make enemies with advantages and disadvantages in specific battles. The idea behind the new class is to put you in situations that will force you to think about you equips. You may encounter an enemy that has an extremely high defense - So you will want to equip weapons that lower defense... In another fight, you might notice that certain enemies reflect critical hit damage back at you.... So you'll probably want to avoid using critical strike weapons.... etc... The goal of the new class is to give you some deeper strategic situation than the current Mecha Combat 101 Class... Anyway, We had a few bugs in the system on Friday and had dedicated most of our time just getting it work properly. Then by the time the release deadline hit, we still had no dialogue, or rewards for completing the class.... It was just not ready for release and there was just too much left to do. Delaying a release is a very difficult decision to make especially given our track record of having something new every week without skipping a beat. I made the desicion to delay very late in the evening because I was still convinced that we were going to be ready...

We did release the artbook and skullcrusher mecha upgrades Friday and I am very proud for MechQuest team because it has been a huge success! I am interested in hearing your reactions to the book on the forums! Also, I'd be interested in hearing your reactions to the new new Skullcrusher mecha. It was a labor of love and a very challenging mecha to code. I feel that it is one of the most over the top fun mecha models to pilot... and it is definitely the most menacing mecha I have seen in the game yet!

The other reason I decided that it was best to delay release was because it was not different enough from the other mecha combat class. It was essentially a reskinning of the previous MEcha Combat class... So, We are now adding some new dialogue and storyline elements to the class. We are also adding encounters with a rival student with a mysterious agenda and we are re-doing the teacher NPC so she looks a bit tougher than Professors Aleysia and Denara. I regret not making last week's release, but I just really didn't feel comfortable with it. In fact, I pretty much asked Korin for a complete overhaul for the new class this week.

You may have noticed that Korin has been taking a much more active role in creating our newest releases! He has done such an excellent job over the last several months that we have decided to give him a much greater role in the game. This is great news because now there is another person besides myself who can produce in game quests and other content! Now I hear Artix coming to hand me a whole slew of new top-secret game projects... Do not fear, I am still always dedicated first and foremost to MechQuest. There's just a little more breathing room now. Once we get in the groove, Korin and I should theoretically be able to crank out twice as much as we do now!

Artix: Hey Warlic - Is Korin doing release this week?
Warlic: Yeah - I'm helping him learn about the MechQuest Engine.
Korin: Hey, Warlic... something broke...um.. I think it's live!
Artix: Hey Warlic, So now that Korin is up to speed, you can work on these 14 new game projects for us, right?
Warlic:*Gulps*

Anyway, good news this week: We're back on track this week and for tomorrow we are finally ready to release the SC Monthly Rare mecha: the Incrediable Aegis mecha... Think of this mecha as the anti-warbear... Tons of defensive capabilities. The new GEARS class will be released on Friday and if we're lucky, we will also have a preview zone for Westion, Part 2 in which you can fight a few new shadowscythe units and grab a rare bonus item...My fingers are crossed!

The Shadowscythe are coming back to town and a lot of things are about to go boom!

Oh And BTW - We have a Design Notes Post form Blues! Every now and then he'll have something to say here: (Note this post is belated from July 8th)

Transmission from the transdimensional Portal:
Hello... can you hear me? Here is blues speaking....

From time to time I will make some announcements regarding Game
Balance Issues and
our plans for rebalancing, buffs etc.
Ok let´s start:

Rebalancing: Our old Equipment rebalancing goes very slow, that´s
because the last weeks were very very busy
with all the releases, Weapons, mechas, etc. We will continue this of course.

Old Mecha revivals: There are still some of the old Models left and we
plan to revive them all to buff them to the standards we have now.
Currently I don´t know which one will be next, stay tuned!

K&S: Maegwyn and I are working on a complete update and new levels. We
will design new enemies which are much smarter than all our current
ones. You will need strategy and good equipment!

GBD: Eagle head and body will get a small buff. Not too much because
the mecha is not bad as it is, but a bit more does not hurt.
There seems to be a pricing issue with the new mechas..... nasty nasty
Gremlins sneaked through the transdimensional portal!
Elements are on my list. For now they do nothing but we have plans to
make them really important, maybe not in general but in special
missions.
The Discombobulators may get also a small buff, we need to take a look
at them again.
Currently a thread in GBD is in progress regarding the rebalancing of
old enemies. Please help us and take a look there!

Coming next..... Interview with our famous Maegwyn!

Have fun

Advanced Combat Theory: Coming Soon!
Friday In-Game Release Delayed: With the release of the MechQuest Artbook and the MechQuest Overdrive Comic .also coming out today, we have decided that the planned in-game release for today will be delayed until next week. (Sorry!)

New Class at GEARS! Coming Next Week! We've been busily perfecting a completely new feature for the newest class at GEARS University! This feature introduces pre-battle advantages and / or disadvantages - it's complex and difficult to describe, and ... you'll see it next week!

We've gotten the battle feature to work properly, and yet we still have some more testing to do before the class is completely ready for you to enjoy. Korin has really outdone himself with the design and coding, and blues has come up with some amazing challenges - we've all worked together on this to give you something truly fantastic. (We're also finishing up some interesting rewards for completing this class, so all in all - definitely making it worth the wait! )

Strange Magic Causes Unintended Sale!
Mecha Pricing! A strange magic not only caused some zeroes to vanish, but also caused mystifying numbers to appear in the pricing of the Level 10 versions of the War Reward mechas. The low, low price of 2880 credits for the Assault Raider SE and the Fulgent Eagle is, of course, incorrect. This unintended sale price will end at 5pm server time today! The pricing gun is set to raise the tags to the proper price of 27500 credits, but we wanted to give you fair warning that the price will go up.

The source of the strange magic is not yet known - this was neither a simple typo nor a calculation error, There is a theory that the sheer quantity of database entries required for the production of so many mechas may have attracted the attention of Gremlins. It is to be hoped that the Gremlins will take a nice vacation on a remote planet ...

HUGE Bowl of EPIC Awesomesauce!
The war on Lagos is over. The longest... the hardest.. the most difficult and ambitious war in MechQuest history is over. I must say, that we are completely exhausted. It was not an easy war to manage. We made some mistakes here and there because there really was no precedent for a war of this magnitude in MechQuest History. I honestly had no idea what I was getting myself into when we started it... This week has been lovingly dubbed MechQuest Hell Week here at the secret underground lab... So, why did we name it thus? Well, because tonight's release includes: 3 RARE Mecha models, 2 new NPCs, 3 major animated cutscenes, another (hopefully surprising plot twist with Rhubarb and Robina), 2 new musical themes, and a major bossfight (with our first "smarter than a brick" enemy AI).. and a new Planet! We are completely exhausted... in that warm fuzzy good kind of way that makes you say... We did that? REALLY? Wow! We rule! .... um, let's never do anything like that ever again... (we never listen when we say that though...)

I hope you feel that this is one of our best releases ever... because I feel that you deserve it after all of your hard work and dedication with this war. Korin especially deserves applause tonight. I gave him an assignment that was absolutely mind boggling... (I actually felt terrible asking this from him) - 3 fully animated cutscenes... with my provided and long-winded dialogue... I think that this was the first time I ever saw a bead of sweat appear on his forehead. He not only cranked out some of our best cutscenes ever (IMO... the best)... He went above and beyond and exceeded my expectations.... You may even catch his NPC go by really fast in one of the scenes in Arthuria... So please, let him know how much you appreciate him in the forums! I'm sure he'll appreciate it!

Today, you'll also notice some fireworks in Soluna City... That means that Tek is selling RARE Fireworks-launching mecha models! WoooHooo! This Weekend Only!

Finally, we're running a little late on the newest Monthly Mecha. So, the Warbear is still available a Tek's Mechs! I'll admit, we made some big mistakes when we balanced the Warbear... It is WAY OVERPOWERED! But you know what? We're not fixing it... When the next monthly mecha is released (currently unnamed), the Warbear will be forever extinct! So get it now while you still can!

Yay! I got to write some music for release today! Always puts me in a good mood... Now... Time for team MechQuest to go to sleep! Goodnight Everyone!
