GAMMA RELEASE on MONDAY

Greetings everyone! We hope you are excited to jump in and be the first to test out battling from the cockpit of your very own Mecha unit. On Monday we will begin the Gamma Release as originally planned... from the very, very, very beginning!

The Story
You are one of many hopeful candidates aboard a shuttle headed to Lore with the hopes of passing the entrance exam to GEARS University. A few important NPCs from later in the game will be traveling with you. This will be a great time to meet them, battle test your Mecha, and learn a little bit about the University before the shuttle lands (If all goes well, later this week!) in Soluna City. Meanwhile, a giant unidentified war-ship sized object is making its way towards the planet. It is expected that the Kingadent (King-President) Slugwrath will address the world on this urgent matter soon..... we hope.

Progressive Release
As the week progresses we will be making more features, items, and areas available. Remember -- this is a Gamma release... which means you get to keep what you earn but ANYTHING can happen, change or go all explody. If this if your first time experiencing an AE-style game release... um.... <chuckles> prepare yourself for utter chaos. If you were present for the release of AdventureQuest and/or DragonFable, come over to the forums and help us let everyone know what to expect. It always starts with a little and grows... and it does this with your help. Everyone is encouraged to join us in coming up with MechQuest ideas, areas, weapons, and improvements. We are all anxious to build this third game side by side with you!

Last Chance to Pre-register
Remember, now is your last chance to pre-register. We will be closing registration to do our final database modifications (as early as tonight). The Gamma release will most likely be Monday afternoon. Oh, quick question -- which game(s) do you play AQ or DF?

Are you a Guardian or/and DragonLord?
If you have upgraded your accounts in either of our other two games AdventureQuest or DragonFable you will be able to verify this once the gamma release is launched. This will allow you to obtain perks in MechQuest as they become available. Two special Mecha chassis are currently in development and planned to be released after we have worked any bugs out of the battle sytem (Bugs? We never have any bugs....) Battle on!

Gamma Release on Monday, October 1st!

I just finished taking a quick look at a the check list... and yup, everything is broken, malfunctioning and not complete. Looks like we are ready to launch! Zhoom has not come in yet due to the DragonFable server cluster upgrade last night (He was up until 5am) but when he does I have a short list of bugs (3,511) waiting for him to cheer him up! The gamma launch will be a a lot like a beta release... but it counts as being live. You will be able to login, look around, and pilot your mech for the first time.The level cap will be pretty low (1 being the lowest!) and a few weapons to buy with credits and equip on your mecha. You will be able to keep any items you earn (unless something goes terribly, terribly wrong). Gamma here we come... OR ELSE! (Cysero's personality is contagious)

Third "Peace Probe" seems to have been "eaten" by the Second

In a desperate attempt to avert a confrontation with the oncoming unidentified warship-sized-object, which is only 6 DAYS AWAY, we have sent yet another (read: 3rd) probe with a message of peace and friendship! Our scientists best guess at what happened this weekend is that the 2nd probe that we sent on Friday ATE the 3rd one that we launched earlier today. This is both shocking and frightening as we are pretty sure no-one purposefully put any teeth on our space probes. The eyes and ears of our world are awaiting the official public statement from our beloved Kingadent Slugwrath.

Bad Things that can happen to your Mecha
Those of you looking to earn some extra credit can list some of the horrible things that can happen to your mecha when hit by a critical hit. These things can have little to no effect on the overall functionality of your battle machine.... or could have a much more severe impact.

Common Mecha Problems: Examples
Cruise Control Damaged - Manual pilot only!
Sensor Malfunction - -1% to hit
Servo Damage! Fortunately no one knows what that is for.
Innerwiring Melted - probably did not need that anyway.
Power Surge! + 5 energy
Cappichino Machine Malfunction - No steamed milk!
Ejection Seat Malfunction - Ejection may be deadly.
The red button is flashing! Good thing you did not read the instruction manual.
Hip^2 damage! (It is hip to be squared)
Armor breach! Damage taken increased by 3%
Cockpit Fire! You have been tanned +5 and may have a new hair style.
Ankle fused! Can only walk forward.... (not that you could walk backwards anyway)
Soda pop machine malfunction - 1 free soda! Awww... it is diet.

Probe sent... but something is wrong!

A warship sized object has appeared on long range scanners. We have sent a probe to investigate. However the results are troubling. The probe sent us the following transmission over and over for an hour then suddenly went silent! " 01100100 01101111 01101111 01101101 " It is only 10 days away from our planet.... the Kingadent has been notifed and we are sending a second high speed probe with a message of peace!

Something strange has been detected on our scanners!

This message was accidentally broadcasted using the same frequency of the G.E.A.R.S. University home-ec department. Joey is still mad that the transmission corrupted his triple chocolate treat pie recipe. Although it does explain why he was putting mayo in it.

Alpha, Beta, Live!

If we are going live October 1st, when are we doing the alpha and the beta and... stuff? Excellent question! My thoughts? Lets do them ALL at the same time*! Let's call it a Gamma. We re-wrote the beginning of the game so you get into the plot faster and um.... we will just expand this game one world at a time and fix stuff** and add functionality as we go! After carefully reading your posts we decided that everyone who participates in the Gamma will get to keep all of their earned Exp, Mecha, and gear. OK... back to work for me... NEED.... MORE.... EXPLODY*** THINGS!

* It is really wierd, but statements like this is why I actually like Artix and the team.

Catastrophic failure.... sorta....

We just returned from DragonCon (See the photos) and it is an all out assault to prepare MechQuest for an October release! So you can imagine our horror when we found that our game engine file was corrupted.... <cries>. But that has never stopped us before! As you read this Zhoom and Warlic are re-adding lost functionality to our last back up* from the 17th while Thyton is working on the shuttle interior and Aisha** is building the house logos for Bloodwolf, Runehawk, and Mistraven. When the alpha opens you will be on the.... well, we need a name for the shuttle taking you to the univeristy. See you on the forums!

* We um, have a much more regular backup schedule now <looks innocent>

Mecha Sneak Peek

G.E.A.R.S. University is a great place to learn math, home ec, and massive assault mecha piloting. Below are some of the more popular mecha used by the three University top student houses: Wolfblade, Runehawk, and Mystraven. Tek's Mechs

Every students at GEARS University knows that the highest power, lowest price (hey, students are on a tight budget) Mech parts can be obtained at Tek's Mechs. Below is a screenshot of her current shop. When you arrive in town, be sure to stop by. Tek is one girl who knows A LOT about Mecha! She also has a secret vintage anime robot collection that is rumored to take up an entire mech bay. Talking about which... what is your favorite mecha shows*?

* Every night since the MechQuest project has been announced, Artix has been watching 1 to 2 hours of Mecha anime (His girlfriend is VERY close to killing him) After Gundam Seed, Fafner, Escaflowne, Big O, Voltron, Eureka 7 and GunSword.... he started watching the entire Robotech series (all three sagas). Macross and the Masters is complete; New Generation starts tonight! The only down side is he says "protoculture" at least once every two sentences now.

Basic Crazy Complex Game Screens

Today I met with Warlic and Zhoom for a three hour meeting about how I can make the game WAY more complicated that AQ & DF combined and then multipled by a large number*. I was almost beaten to a pulp when I got to the part about being able to jump out of your mech with a lightsword in one hand and a laser blaster in the other to hack an enemy computer with nano-bots. In unrelated news, Warlic, Zhoom, J6, and Thyton finalized the basic user interface for buying, selling, equiping parts on your mech. Thyton drew endless sketches until we finally achieved a final manacing design for the main villian of MechQuest. The villian deserves an entire post of his own... that will be something to look forward to. MechQuest will also feature our very first... Nurse! There have been major debates about the nurse's uniform (This is a all-ages game after all!) But it will certainly be more rewarding to see a smiling face at the ward rather than the skull and scythe of the Reaper after your mecha blows into thousands of tiny mechy pieces. Another interesting NPC is our shuttle pilot who sort of looks like Cysero. We were thinking of naming him Sys Zero and seeing if anyone got it**. I will post a picture of him next and you can help us determine the name! Finally... we are getting very close to Alpha Testing (really). More on that coming soon!

* This may be my special power. Either that or the ability to have a bag of 100 marbles consisting of 99 red ones and 1 black one. If you ask me to blindfold myself and reach into the bag and see how many marbles I would pull out before I finally got to the black one.... the answer would be 100. Cysero's super power is the ability to always know the outcome of Paper/Rock/Scissors (Note: Never challenge him at this)

Kingident and the Royal Mecha Guard
What is a Kingident? Is that some sort of new minty fresh toothpaste? No, it is the current tyranical leader of the free world (Actually, most worlds are free except for those that require you to upgrade.) Kingidents, like Presidents are voted into power, but still have to battle the Royal Guard of the previous Kingident to claim the throne. It is messy, horrible, and rather good entertainment on a regular basis. The world of Lore has had many Kingidents since it rose from the old ways of its dark ages*. Kingadent Bram Oaklore, the current ruler, is responsible for the foundation of the G.E.A.R.S. Academy... or University... regardless; his advisor Warlic suggest it would be a GREAT idea to promote Math, Science, Art, and Giant Assult Mecha Combat in an exclusive private school for gifted mutants**. We are actually not sure how you and the others got their promotional brochure. But you will never forget the reassuring "official tagline" of the academy: 12% Survival Rate Guarenteed!

Weather Delays

Thank you for applying to the academy. We are looking forward to watching you test as a pilot candidate. Unfortunately , due to an astral storm and assorted technical difficulties, the shuttle scheduled to pick you up for transport to the academy will not be able to make its round trip this week. We will post the new shuttle schedule as soon as it becomes available. As you know Astral storms are unpredictable in nature and can cause devastating damage. We will post the new shuttle schedule as soon as possible -- check back daily for updates.

Mecha Battle System
The number one question at G.E.A.R.S. Academy is how does Mecha Combat work? Excellent question! Especially since most of our most advanced instructors have never piloted one. They have read lots of books about piloting though! Once you are comfortably sitting in your hundred ton dragonfire powered war machine and squaring off on the battlefield with your opponent, the combat menu will appear. All of the weapon systems you have equipped on your mech will be listed in front of you. While the full range of available weapons in the universe is unknown at this time, we are somewhat familiar with Lasers, Cannons, Machine Guns, Missiles, and NanoDroids. Each weapon is capable of damaging your opponent's mech (Often with explosive special FX!) but uses your Mecha's energy and the weapon will take some time to recharge. High damage weaponry will have likely have a longer recharge time. Some smaller weaponry may not do as much damage, but hit multiple times giving you more changes to get the all-mighty critical hit and possibly blowing off a part of the enemy mecha. Every turn has a chance for something bizarre to happen to your opponent. A critical hit requires a roll on the "Bad Things" chart. The more damage a unit has taken the worse (and weirder) things start popping up on the chart. (OOC time!) So, we were thinking of mecha limbs blowing off, weapon malfunctions, energy leaks/bursts/drains, random explosions, bonus damage, doubling energy usage, etc. Do you have any idea of what else we could add to the "Bad Things" chart? We could add some good things too... see you on the forums!

Dear Future Mech Pilot,

PilotAs all new students at the Academy know, piloting your Mecha requires skill, determination, and a wicked awesome looking jumpsuit! That is why we are pleased to announce that along with enrollment and starter Mecha, you will be getting your very own brand new Voidpilot Pro all-purpose pilot uniform. It has a base of mithril with extra durable quarkplate armor making you almost completely invulnerable to bullets, explosions, and conventional weapontry. Too bad it does not come with a helmet. The Voidpilot Pro does feature a build-in carrying case for your Blaster and Energy Sword. (Note: Due to the size of Spellshotguns and Laser Claymores, they require an additional add on.) Many improvements have been made to this model making it vastly superior to previous models. For example, Pilots no longer randomly explode due to rapid changes in internal pressure. It also features self administering anti-lycanthrope and anti-vampirsm serum in the event you are bitten by a hostile otherworldly supernatural creature.... or walk down the wrong alley. You could use the manual override to turn this feature off, but why would anyone want to do that?

Woooohoooo! I cannot wait to see it. The entire team will be going to watch it as soon as possible (you know... um... research!) Thyton has been heavily motivated by all of the preview things they have been releasing over the past few weeks. He has been drawing so much you can see the smoke coming from his pencil. This week in MechQuest we will be rigging up the login and building character creation. Yes, you will be able to walk around outside of your mech with DragonFable-style characters. This could lead to some very interesting missions that require you to get out of your mech. Any ideas for the types of weapons you would use while on foot? *coughs* Laser Sword *coughs*

June.29.2007."New Website goes live!"
Website update! Pretty... pretty.... shiny.... shiny..... Congratulations everyone, Pre-registration is now open!

10,000 registrations in the first hour. So if you have signed up, congratulations, your User ID is below 10K! Some users are reporting an ID# of 1. If you got this, it is likely you attempted to sign up before the system was actually live at 1pm EST today... which means your account was not really created. You would have gotten an email (Zhoom had that working for testing purposes) but your account was not really created. So, if you signed up before 1pm when the site was released today please try to recreate your account now.

You guys are amazing! To all of you who participated in the sponsorship event last week, please accept the thanks of all future MechQuest players. "But Artix, we only got 3K Coca Cola signups... I thought we needed 10,000?". Indeed, (Pssst... boy do I love sharing good news) that is correct... but let me just say, you guys turned some heads when you signed up so fast. Everyone figured it would take a month before there were enough signups to open pre-registration. But you were on track to complete it next week!!!! LOL, I think you guys scared the marketing guys (honestly). This this has been declared a major success -- Congratulations everyone! We are opening pre-registration for you next week, and ordering a new cluster of servers! My favorite part about server clusters is naming the machines. Definitely going with a mecha or sci-fi theme on this one. To those of you who signed up this week... you pretty much just made this game happen. Battle on!

June.22.2007."1001st Anniversary of the Great Cysero Rebellion Discovery!"
It was 1001 years ago that archeologists unearthed a strange glowing orb. The information we learned from this strange device changed the course of human history forever* (Almost as much as the Paris Hilton jail incident). We learned that in the times of sword and sorcery there was a great revolt lead by several courageous adventurers... for no reason whatsoever... . but their actions formed a community and a way of doing things which exists to this very day. It is almost as if reality does not exist until someone on the forums says something.... then, those things come to pass. I learned this while training at the Mecha Academy.... or was it a University? Hmmm.. strange... I cannot remember what that training town was called. Can YOU**?

The Story Begins..... or ends.... or begins a new starting!
5,000 years before AdventureQuest* there was a time of BIG AND HEAVILY ARMED MECHA! Hundreds of tons of lasers, missiles, cannons, machine guns, flash lights and the toaster of destruction.... the holes these weapons make will be so big you will probably will completely miss the plot holes! Build, customize and pilot your own Mecha in what will be best described at "non-stop-insane-chaotic-explosions". Battle on!
